What is Dry Eye Disease (DED)?
Dry Eye Disease is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Tears are essential for maintaining the health, comfort, and clarity of the eye surface. When the tear film becomes unstable, the eyes may feel dry, irritated, or uncomfortable.
Dry eye symptoms can range from occasional mild discomfort to persistent irritation that affects daily activities such as reading, driving, using digital devices, or wearing contact lenses.
Common Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease
People with Dry Eye Disease may experience:
- Dryness or grittiness in the eyes
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Redness or irritation
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Eye fatigue, especially after screen use
- Foreign body sensation (“something in the eye”)
Symptoms may become more noticeable in air-conditioned environments, windy weather, during prolonged screen time, or when wearing contact lenses.
